“On Tin Estate,” a local whispers, pointing towards the towering structures. “A place of stories.” On Tin Estate. A public housing estate nestled in Shun Lee, Kowloon. It stands as a testament to Hong Kong’s public housing initiatives. On Tin Estate first opened its doors to residents in late 1981. It offered a new home for many, some of whom relocated from older estates like Lei Cheng Uk and Kun Tong. This relocation paved the way for redevelopment and improvements in those areas. The estate consists of eleven residential blocks. These blocks were built in phases between 1981 and 1984, with the final addition completed in 1989. On Tin Estate, initially known as the 105th estate built by the Hong Kong Housing Authority, quickly became a vibrant community. On a summer day in July 1986, a significant contract was awarded, valued at HK$24.8 million. This contract aimed to construct a secondary school within the estate. This investment in education underscored the commitment to providing comprehensive facilities for the residents of On Tin Estate. However, life at On Tin Estate hasn’t been without its shadows. A tragic incident occurred on October 10, 2015, at the Man Shun Restaurant in Tin Kuen House. A dispute escalated into violence, resulting in the death of a 58-year-old man. This event, later classified as manslaughter, served as a stark reminder of the complexities of life within this bustling community. On Tin Estate remains a significant landmark in Shun Lee. It’s a place where lives intertwine, stories unfold, and the spirit of Hong Kong’s public housing endeavors persists.
