“A church like heaven.” That was the vision. This vision led to the birth of People’s Church. Let’s explore its Cape Town story.
People’s Church has roots stretching back over a century. It began in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1906. A visit to the Azusa Street revival in 1907 changed everything. The power of the Holy Spirit ignited a passion. This passion transformed the church.
In 1933, the church became part of the Assemblies of God. It was then named First Christian Assembly of God. In 2001, Chris and Jan Beard became lead pastors. They dreamed of a “church like heaven”. In 2012, the church embraced its current name. This change reflected their mission. They wanted to provide access to Jesus for all.
That same year, Scott and Erin Pongratz moved to Cape Town. They were missionaries with the Assemblies of God. They helped start many churches in South Africa.
By 2019, God stirred a new desire in Scott and Erin. They longed to plant their own church. They saw the rapid urbanization of Africa. They recognized the need for a church in a growing city center. God called them to Cape Town. It is a city influential across the continent. It is home to diverse ethnicities.
Scott connected with Chris Beard in 2019. They shared similar visions. They decided to partner and start People’s Church in Cape Town.
In January 2022, People’s Church Cape Town held its first service. It took place in Scott and Erin’s living room. Weekly services continued there. Soon, they needed more space. The church prayed for a new location. In June 2022, People’s Church moved to The Argyle, on 1 Argyle Street, in Woodstock. Woodstock was the location God had chosen.
The church grew each week. On September 18, 2022, People’s Church Cape Town officially launched. God is blessing the work in Cape Town. It started over 100 years ago with People’s Church Cincinnati.
People’s Church exists for all people. It welcomes those in the community and around the world. It engages in local outreaches and service projects. It is a church not just in the city, but for the city. Its passion is to influence people in Cape Town and beyond.
People’s Church strives for upward worship. It gives glory and praise to God. This happens individually and as a church community. Everything centers on Jesus. He is their King. They love Him by obeying His commands.
The church values inward commitment. It nurtures authentic relationships with God and each other. Commitment to God and the church is essential.
Today, People’s Church continues to grow. It impacts Cape Town with its message of faith and community. It welcomes all on their unique faith journey. The church believes that people are important because God loves people.
