“A haven of peace” That’s how many describe the Bu00f6hm Chapel. But its story is far from serene. It begins not as the Bu00f6hm Chapel but as St Ursula Church. Built between 1954 and 1956 it was the work of Gottfried Bu00f6hm. His father Dominikus Bu00f6hm’s earlier designs heavily influenced the building.

This wasn’t just any church. It was one of the first churches Gottfried designed independently. He was a rising star in architecture a son following in his renowned father’s footsteps. Dominikus Bu00f6hm was himself famous for designing numerous avant-garde churches. Many were in the Expressionist style. Gottfried’s work here shows a similar boldness. A modern interpretation of sacred space.

The building stood in Kalscheuren a suburb of Hu00fcrth. It served its community for over fifty years. Then in 2006 it was deconsecrated. Its liturgical items altar baptismal font side altar and tabernacle were removed. The differing floor levels and stairs became pointless.

Enter Rafael Jablonka. He acquired the building in 2010. He meticulously restored it. He sought advice from Gottfried Bu00f6hm himself ensuring the restoration respected the architect’s vision. The chapel’s floor was leveled. The bell tower was freed from obstructions. New bells were cast for a carillon designed by Philip Glass. A new garden was created based on Piet Blanckaert’s designs.

The reborn building the Bu00f6hm Chapel opened in autumn 2010. A Terry Winters exhibition marked the occasion. Today it functions as an art gallery a space for contemplation and a testament to architectural innovation. It is a building that embodies a transformation from sacred space to a vibrant center for art and culture. It stands as a powerful reminder of the evolution of faith and the enduring legacy of Gottfried Bu00f6hm. The Bu00f6hm Chapel isn’t just a building. It is a story. A story of faith renewal and artistic rebirth.
