“Water is life.” How many times have we heard that? Today we explore how that saying comes to life at the Lion Rock High Level No. 1 Primary Service Reservoir.
The Lion Rock High Level No. 1 Primary Service Reservoir integrates with the Tseung Kwan O fresh water primary service reservoir. This integration involved laying about 1.4 kilometers of fresh water mains. These mains ranged from 600 mm to 1400 mm in diameter. The location for this project was in Jordan Valley, Sau Mau Ping, and Tseung Kwan O new town.
The project also included in-situ reprovisioning. It also meant uprating the Shum Wan Shan fresh water pumping station. The station’s capacity increased from 135000 cubic meters per day to 350000 cubic meters per day.
Kwan On Construction Co Ltd was the contractor for this important project. Construction began on June 30, 2008. It finished on March 29, 2011. The total cost was HK$159.7 million.
Another project involved the Ngau Tam Mei Water Treatment Works Extension. This included extending the Ngau Tam Mei Fresh Water Primary Service Reservoir. It also involved modifying the Raw Water Tunnel Junction. This modification happened at Chamber G. Associated mainlaying was part of the project too.
The works included designing and building a fresh water primary service reservoir. This reservoir has a capacity of 54000 cubic meters. The works also included designing and building a 0.6 kilometer long tunnel. This tunnel provides vehicle access and raw water mains. Connection chambers and a ventilation building were built. The project included a tunnel portal. Associated works were performed.
Fresh water trunk mains were part of the project. These mains run from Ngau Tam Mei Water Treatment Works to Castle Peak Road. The location is near Pok Oi Interchange in Yuen Long. The approximate total length is 6.7 kilometers. Other related works took place.
Construction was scheduled to commence in July 2025. The project was estimated to take about 66 months to complete.
The Lion Rock High Level No. 1 Primary Service Reservoir and associated projects showcase Hong Kong’s commitment to providing fresh water. They ensure a reliable water supply for its residents. These essential projects often go unnoticed. They are vital to daily life. Next time you turn on the tap, remember the engineering and effort behind it all.
