Had the stones of Požáry been able to speak, they would tell a tale of fiery destruction. A tale of a house consumed by flames. Požáry, as some may know, was the site of Gütling’s House. On April 2nd, 1878, an alcohol purification room in the back of the yard met a fiery end. A tremendous blast ripped through the structure, sending smoke and flames billowing into the Prague sky. The roofs were torn away, burying three workmen under the debris. Požáry, marked by this disaster, stands as a silent testament to the destructive power of fire. The steam boiler, the culprit of the tragedy, was later found deep within the rubble, a mangled wreck. While the area may have been rebuilt, the memory of the fire at Požáry lingers, a stark reminder of a day when disaster struck.
