The ČSÚ’s roots reach back to 1919, just months after Czechoslovakia’s independence. A law was passed, establishing a state statistical service much like the one housed within these walls. The Czech Statistical Office as we know it today was established in 1969. The ČSÚ orchestrates elections and the once-a-decade census, offering a snapshot of the nation’s population. Think of the sheer volume of data collected, processed, and disseminated from this very building! The ČSÚ plays a vital role in the Czech Republic’s participation in the European Union, cooperating with international organizations and contributing to EU-wide statistics. Before this modern, silver structure graced Prague 10-Strašnice, the ČSÚ resided in Prague 8-Karlín. However, the devastating 2002 European floods irrevocably damaged the old building. This prompted the move to this location, inaugurated in 2004. Beyond these walls, the ČSÚ extends its reach to every region of the Czech Republic, ensuring comprehensive data collection and analysis from across the nation. The Czech Statistical Office is an independent body. It operates free from government influence. Its president is appointed by the President of the Czech Republic.
