Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Shenzhen’s history lies the tale of Minsk World. This unique military theme park, centered around the colossal Soviet aircraft carrier Minsk, once captivated visitors with its blend of history and entertainment. Minsk World opened its doors in May 2000. By 2005, over five million people had explored its decks and exhibits, generating an impressive 450 million yuan in revenue. The Minsk itself had a storied past. Serving as part of the Soviet Pacific Fleet, it was eventually retired due to an accident requiring repairs beyond the capabilities of its home base. Sold first to a South Korean businessman and later to a Chinese company, the Minsk found new life as the centerpiece of Minsk World. Visitors could explore four decks, including the flight and hangar decks. Exhibits showcased the ship’s living quarters, weaponry, and various aspects of its naval life. Staff in mock military uniforms added to the atmosphere, while choreographed musical performances entertained crowds. The park even offered motorboat rides around the Minsk. Onshore exhibits displayed People’s Liberation Army Ground Force equipment, expanding the military theme. However, Minsk World’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. The operating company faced bankruptcy in 2006, leading to the carrier’s auction and subsequent purchase by CITIC Shenzhen. Rebranded as CITIC Minsk World, the park continued to operate until 2016. Declining visitor numbers and local government land reclamation plans led to its closure. The Minsk was relocated to Zhoushan for repairs, destined for a new theme park in Nantong, Jiangsu. The Minsk’s story, much like that of Minsk World, reflects a unique blend of military history, entrepreneurial spirit, and the ever-evolving landscape of tourism. Though Minsk World no longer exists in Shenzhen, its memory remains as a testament to a fascinating chapter in the city’s history.
