“A ‘Balge’ of stories,” a mischievous voice whispered, “that’s what this place holds!” We stand before the ehemaliges Haus der Brauerzunft Plaque, a marker whispering tales of Haus Balchem. This building, a survivor of centuries, embodies Cologne’s vibrant past. The ehemaliges Haus der Brauerzunft Plaque itself might be small, but it points to a structure steeped in history. Haus Balchem, affectionately nicknamed “Em Balge,” has worn many hats. Originally a blacksmith’s forge in the medieval era, it transformed into a brewery in the 17th century. Later, it became a bustling tavern, and now, it houses a library. Its final name comes from Johann Balchem, a descendant of a long-standing brewing family. A particularly juicy tale surrounds Heinrich Deutz, the city councilman and brewmaster who built this grand brewhouse. Legend has it, Deutz yearned for a house with a view of the Rhine. He wanted to watch the merchant ships sail by. Ignoring building regulations of the time, he added an oriel window above the entrance. This architectural flourish was typically reserved for nobility, adding a touch of defiance to the building’s story. The brewhouse, complete with its tavern, became a popular meeting spot for council members and guild masters. The legacy continued under Deutz’s heirs, and the tavern thrived, though its name changed several times over the years. World War II left its mark, devastating the house. Only the facade survived the onslaught. During its post-war restoration, burnt interiors were replaced with salvaged pieces from other old townhouses. This blend of old and new added a unique charm. A remarkable beamed ceiling and a spiral staircase, leading to Deutz’s beloved oriel, became part of Haus Balchem’s story. The building’s story continued to evolve. Until 1970, it housed the tavern “Zum goldenen Löwen” (The Golden Lion). Then, under the city’s ownership, the landmark underwent extensive renovations. The former tavern transformed into a public library. The upper floors, intended to become an apprentice dormitory, remain unused to this day. Even in recent years, Haus Balchem has seen changes. Between 2013 and 2017, further renovations modernized the library. The ehemaliges Haus der Brauerzunft Plaque, therefore, commemorates more than just a building. It honors a testament to Cologne’s resilience and a place where history whispers from every corner.
