“Winterslust” sounds like a fairytale castle. But it was merely the original name of an estate that now forms part of Sea Point. Get ready to explore Sea Point. This affluent Cape Town suburb sits between Signal Hill and the Atlantic. Sea Point offers a vibrant mix of history, culture, and stunning scenery.

Sea Point got its name in 1776. Commander Sam Wallis encamped his men here. They were avoiding a smallpox epidemic in Cape Town. The area then grew into a residential suburb in the early 1800s. It merged with Green Point in 1839.

In 1862, the Sea Point tramline opened. It became Cape Town’s first commuter suburb. Later, the Metropolitan and Suburban Railway Company added a line to the City Centre.

One of Sea Point’s most influential residents was Saul Solomon. He was a liberal parliamentarian and founder of the Cape Argus. Solomon fought racial inequality. His Round Church reflected his syncretic approach to religion. It housed four different religions without denominational corners. Sadly, the city council destroyed “Solomon’s Temple” in the 1930s.

Ships sailing into Table Bay from the east coast of Africa must round Sea Point. Many ships have been wrecked on the offshore reefs. In 1954, the Basuto Coast ended up on the rocks. A fireman trying to help the crew was swept away. In 1966, the S.A. Seafarer ran aground. Its cargo included toxic compounds causing environmental concerns.

During apartheid, Sea Point was a whites-only area. However, black and coloured residents continued to live here. The Twin Towers on Beach Road were built during a “white housing crisis”.

In the early 1970s, the Ritz Hotel was built. It had a revolving restaurant. Before the V&A Waterfront, Sea Point was known as a “tiny Manhattan by the sea”.

The Sea Point promenade is a popular communal space. People stroll, jog, and socialize here. The coastline varies with rocky parts and broad beaches. The Sea Point beach adjoins an Olympic-sized seawater swimming pool.

The rocks off the beaches are Precambrian metamorphic rocks. Charles Darwin observed a rare geological interface here. Lava had been extruded through layers of Malmesbury shale. This is known as the Sea Point Contact. A plaque commemorates Darwin’s observation.

Sea Point is known for its large Jewish population. You will find synagogues and kosher food options. The Marais Road Shul was the largest Jewish congregation in the Southern Hemisphere in 1994.

Sea Point is a popular place to live and invest. Time Out magazine named it one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world in both 2022 and 2023.

So next time you’re in Cape Town, be sure to visit Sea Point. You can experience its unique charm. Enjoy its rich history. Take a walk along the Sea Point Promenade.
