What if I told you that Barker Road wasn’t always Barker Road? It’s a story of changing names and rising property values. Today we are standing on Barker Road in Hong Kong. It sits on Victoria Peak. This road is more than just a path. It’s a slice of Hong Kong’s history.

Barker Road stretches about 1.7 kilometers. It winds from Old Peak Road to Peak Road. The road sits about 350 meters above sea level. Barker Road got its name from George Digby Barker. He was a military commander. He also acted as Hong Kong’s administrator. He served between May and December 1891.

Barker Road opened in 1898. The Public Works Department shared details in its annual report. The report mentioned the road’s completion. It also noted the cost: $26,880.00. The road spanned 5,660 feet. Its gradient was 2 in 40. Some parts had steeper gradients. These were about 1 in 20. This made it suitable for rickshaw traffic. Even before it was finished, Barker Road became a popular spot for evening walks.

Originally, Barker Road started at Plantation Road. This was near the Barker Road station. Later, the section from the station to Old Peak Road was renamed. It changed from Plantation Road to Barker Road.

Speaking of the Peak Tram, it crosses Barker Road. The tram runs on a bridge. This creates a narrow tunnel effect. Also, the Barker Road stop has a unique feature. It has a proper station building. It has a concrete roof covering the platform and track. This roof wasn’t original. It was added in 1919.

Barker Road is known for its expensive real estate. Many houses offer stunning views. Residents enjoy unobstructed vistas of Victoria Harbour. This prime location comes at a premium. Not many houses exist due to the steep terrain. Many of the original houses have been rebuilt. Today’s houses are often second or third generation structures.

One notable building once stood on Barker Road. This was Victoria Hospital. It was located at numbers 15-17. The hospital opened in 1903. A maternity ward was added in 1923. Today, this is Victoria Flats. It is one of the oldest buildings on Barker Road. During World War II, the hospital suffered damage and looting. By 1947, it was beyond repair. It was demolished. Victoria House was built on the site in 1951.

In recent years, Barker Road has seen significant property transactions. The Lai family, owners of Hongrongyuan Property Group, have been active investors. In 2015, they bought a unit at 28 Barker Road. In 2016, they acquired a villa near Barker Road. These deals highlight the area’s desirability.

Today, Barker Road remains a prestigious address. It offers a blend of history, stunning views, and luxury living. As we conclude our walk, remember the road’s evolution. From its construction in 1898 to its modern-day status. Barker Road is a testament to Hong Kong’s enduring appeal.
