Let’s step back in time to understand the roots of the Christian & Missionary Alliance. The Chinese Churches Association of Christian and Missionary Alliance started in 1976. It began in Piedmont California. A special committee studied intercultural ministry needs in 1972. This included Native Americans and other minorities. In 1975, a department was established. It promoted intercultural ministry within the Christian and Missionary Alliance. Rev Richard Colenso was appointed as the General Director. He called a special meeting on January 9 1976. It was for all contemporary Chinese Alliance Church pastors. The purpose was to establish the CCA.
Eight Chinese Alliance churches were represented by their pastors. Rev John Wong was appointed President of CCA. A four-member Executive Committee was elected. In 1977, Rev Philip Law became President. He served as Field Director for nine years until 1985.
From 1976 to 1985, the CCA functioned as a District. Rev Law supervised 33 Chinese Alliance churches. In 1985, the CCA transitioned from a Ministry Field to an Association. The administrative accountability moved under the supervision of geographical districts. The CCA then functioned as a fellowship. It coordinated and promoted Chinese ministry in the USA. The CCA President became a non-paid position. A new position of Executive Secretary was created.
As Rev Law finished his term in 1985, Rev Lau was elected as the new CCA President. Rev Abraham Poon became the first ES. In 1988 Rev Philip Teng was elected as the CCA President. Rev Peter Chu was appointed as the ES. He continued to serve until his retirement in 2009. Rev Michael Wu was elected as the Executive Director. Rev Wallace Mang was elected as the ED in 2013. Rev. James Chung is the current Executive Director of the CCA.
The CCA grew significantly over the years. It started with 12 churches in 1976. By 1985, it had 33 churches. In 1994, it reached 62 churches. Now, there are 83 churches in the Association. This growth reflects the mission of the Christian & Missionary Alliance. It involves casting vision and leadership in church planting. It also promotes communication and partnership among churches.
