A wave of warmth washes over you. You are standing before Vaclav Havel Airport Prague. Its modern glass and steel gleam under the Czech sun.

This isn’t just an airport. It’s a gateway. It’s a living testament to Prague’s history and its vibrant present. Vaclav Havel Airport Prague didn’t spring up overnight. Its story began in 1937. It replaced the older Kbely Airport. The original terminal designed by architect Adolf Bens remains. You can still see it today as Terminal 4. It’s a beautiful example of functionalist architecture.

The airport quickly outgrew its original size. It underwent major reconstructions in 1956 1968 1997 and 2006. Each expansion reflects the changing needs of Prague and the world. The runway system expanded too. Today Vaclav Havel Airport Prague boasts two runways. The main runway 06/24 is used most often due to Prague’s prevailing winds. A third runway 04/22 is permanently closed now used for parking.

The airport played a significant role in history. Soviet paratroopers seized it in 1968. They facilitated the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. This dark chapter is a stark reminder of the airport’s place in a turbulent past.

Later it experienced a more positive transformation. In 2012 it was renamed Vaclav Havel Airport Prague. This honored the legacy of the country’s first post-Velvet Revolution president. A public petition spearheaded by Slovak film director Fero Fenic helped secure the name change. Over 65000 people signed the petition.

Even James Bond graced the tarmac of Vaclav Havel Airport Prague. The airport stood in for Miami International Airport in the 2006 film Casino Royale. Its modern facilities and impressive size made it the perfect double.

Today Vaclav Havel Airport Prague serves as a hub for Smartwings. It’s also an operating base for Ryanair and Eurowings. In 2024 the airport served over 16 million passengers. It connects Prague to over 170 destinations worldwide.

Vaclav Havel Airport Prague is more than just a place to catch a flight. It is a place of history. It’s a place of change. It is a place that reflects Prague’s dynamism and its vital role in the heart of Europe. As you stand here you are witness to its ongoing story.
