Perched on the edge of Joss House Bay, Tai Miu Au stands as a testament to time and tradition. It’s not just any temple. It is Hong Kong’s oldest and largest Tin Hau Temple, a beacon for fishermen and landlubbers alike. Tai Miu Au, also known as “Big Temple” or Tai Miu, has witnessed centuries of Hong Kong’s history unfold. Built in 1266 by salt traders, it exudes an aura of ancient wisdom. The temple’s protruding eaves and courtyard filled with drying silver bait whisper tales of generations past. Inside, three statues of Tin Hau reside. One is even used for processions during the vibrant Tin Hau Festival, a celebration that draws thousands to Tai Miu Au every year. Accompanying Tin Hau are her faithful attendants, General See-all and General Hear-all. Their names, “guan” (to watch) and “yin” (sound), combine to form “Guanyin,” the name of another revered deity. Behind Tai Miu Au lies a massive rock etched with an inscription from 1274. This inscription, the oldest dated one found in Hong Kong, documents a visit by a salt administrator and his friend. It also details the history of two temples, further adding to the rich tapestry of Tai Miu Au’s past. From the temple, adventurous souls can embark on the High Junk Peak Country Trail, a 6.6km trek that leads to Tin Ha Shan (273m) and then to High Junk Peak (344m) before descending back to Tai Au Mun. So, as you stand before Tai Miu Au, remember, you’re not just looking at a temple. You’re gazing upon a living piece of Hong Kong’s history, a place where faith, tradition, and the echoes of centuries intertwine.
