“At the heart of Diocesan College, physically and spiritually, is the church”. That’s how the school itself describes the War Memorial Chapel.

The War Memorial Chapel stands as a testament to remembrance. It honors the 110 Old Diocesan boys who perished in World War I. This chapel is not just a building. It is a poignant reminder of sacrifice.

Designed by Charles Percival Walgate. Constructed by Joseph Rubbi. The War Memorial Chapel was completed in 1926. Canon Birt wanted a chapel that would commemorate the fallen ODs of WWI. He also wanted it to seat the whole school in a single sitting. That is still so today.

Baker called it a masterpiece. Its architecture is impressive. Its purpose is deeply meaningful.

The War Memorial Chapel isn’t the college’s only chapel. The smaller Brooke Chapel offers a space for quiet reflection. It was built in the 1870s. Many old boys maintain their links with the Brooke Chapel. Some are married in it. Some are buried from it.

Four times a week, the War Memorial Chapel bells toll. They summon the school to worship. The bells are named Faith, Hope, and Charity. Neighbors find peace in their tolling. They know a community is in prayer.

Each term starts and ends with a Holy Eucharist. Once a term, the college meets for a formal College Evensong. The singing in the War Memorial Chapel sets the school apart. Many boys highlight it as a peak experience.

The school was founded in 1849 by Robert Gray. He was the first Anglican Bishop of Cape Town. His vision was to provide Christian education. He wanted “a great engine for the extension of the pure faith of Christ”. This underpins the school’s existence. The positioning of the War Memorial Chapel and the Brooke Chapel at the center of the school is no accident.

Today, the church plays a profound role in the Bishops community. The War Memorial Chapel stands as a symbol of faith, remembrance, and community. It connects past and present. It is a place of solace. It is a place of inspiration. It is a place of remembrance.

The War Memorial Chapel remains central to Diocesan College. It physically and spiritually embodies the school’s values.
