Did Trappist Dairy Limited ever imagine its humble beginnings would lead to a bacterial bombshell? In 1956, on the tranquil Lantau Island, Father Jen Stanislus of the Trappist Haven Monastery founded Trappist Dairy Limited. The monks sought a way to sustain their order. They began producing milk on a small scale. Trappist Dairy Limited quickly became known for its rich, creamy milk, sold in nostalgic half-pint glass bottles. The iconic cross pattée on its logo, a nod to its religious roots, became a symbol of quality. As demand grew, the dairy moved to Yuen Long, partnering with Lark International Dairy Holdings Limited for management and expanding its operations. Trappist Dairy Limited’s product line diversified. They offered not just fresh milk but also flavored milk beverages and yogurts. Think banana, mango, papaya, and even chocolate and ginger milk. Their Spoona and Sippa yogurts, made with fresh milk, were a hit. In 2019, the Spoona low-fat series launched. It came in strawberry and passion fruit flavors, further solidifying Trappist Dairy Limited’s competitive edge. But 2015 brought a storm of controversy. A batch of Trappist Dairy Limited’s fresh milk was recalled. Tests revealed a shocking bacterial contamination, exceeding legal limits by thousands of times. Despite this setback, Trappist Dairy Limited perseveres. Though production is now handled by a private firm in Guangzhou, the monks still hold a stake. The legacy of Trappist Dairy Limited, once synonymous with pure, creamy goodness, is now tinged with the memory of this contamination crisis.
