Did you know Vila Na Loužku once belonged to a boxing trainer? That’s right this unassuming villa on Na Loužku Street in Prague 5 has quite a history. Built in 1929 by architect Jan Pilař it was initially owned by Václav Pondělíček a prominent boxing trainer of the First Republic. Later it passed into the hands of Mr Přibík a glass factory owner. Vila Na Loužku’s story isn’t just about its owners. It’s about the changes Prague has seen.

The villa itself is a charming example of late classicism. It sits in a lovely old garden. This garden boasts a sizable cypress tree and other greenery. Original terraces a fountain and a small garden pool still remain. A stucco relief of Saint George is visible on the street facade. These details whisper tales of a bygone era.

After nationalization in the 1950s Vila Na Loužku became the residence of former President Antonín Novotný after 1968. Different residents lived there after his death including the then Minister of Health Jaroslav Prokopec. Prokopec carried out further renovations in the 1980s. These renovations reflect the shifting architectural tastes of the time. The villa even served as a film set for Jan Hřebejk’s Kawasaki Rose.

Today Vila Na Loužku faces an uncertain future. A development company plans to demolish it. They want to build a complex of modern four-story buildings with nine apartments. Underground parking for nineteen cars is also planned. This development has sparked debate among local residents. They worry it will destroy the neighborhood’s character. Despite their protests and the historical significance of the villa the Urban Development Committee of Prague 5 approved the project. This decision aligns with Prague’s expansion strategy.

Vila Na Loužku stands as a testament to a changing Prague. Its story is one of boxing trainers glass factory owners presidents and ministers. Ultimately it is a reminder of how even seemingly insignificant villas can play a part in larger historical events. It remains to be seen if this villa will survive or if it will be a memory in the ever-evolving landscape of Prague.
