Roztoky whispers tales of divided streams and ancient settlements. The name itself comes from the Czech word for “divided stream”. It is a nod to its location at the confluence of a small stream and the Vltava River. This town in the Prague-West District boasts a history stretching back millennia.

Roztoky’s story starts long before written records. Archaeological finds show continuous habitation from the early Stone Age to the early Middle Ages. Imagine early humans settling here. They were drawn to the fertile land and strategic location.

The first written mention of Roztoky appears in a charter from 1233. Peter of Roztoky is mentioned in this document. He provides the earliest glimpse of the town’s medieval existence. Think about Peter. He was one of the first landowners or officials to be mentioned in the town.

Roztoky’s location north of Prague has shaped its destiny. It sits on the left bank of the Vltava River. The town is nestled in the Prague Plateau. The highest point is 310 meters above sea level.

From 1870 to 1952, Roztoky was home to Jan Felkl’s globe manufacturing industry. Felkl’s globes were famous worldwide. They put Roztoky on the map, so to speak. Envision skilled artisans crafting detailed globes. They were shipped to classrooms and libraries around the world.

Levý Hradec is a significant locality within Roztoky. It holds the remains of a Slavic gord. The Přemyslid dynasty founded this important site. Duke Bořivoj I built Bohemia’s first Christian church here in the 980s. It was dedicated to Saint Clement. Picture the church. It was a center of early Christianity in Bohemia. The church has been rebuilt many times. Only the foundations of the rotunda remain from the original structure.

Roztoky has been home to several notable people. Zdenka Braunerová was a painter and graphic designer. Emil Utitz was a philosopher and psychologist. Jiří Srnec was a theatre director and artist. Lubomír Beneš, an animator, director, and author, lived and died here. Today, actor Martin Myšička calls Roztoky home. They all shaped Czech culture and arts.

Roztoky maintains a partnership with Skawina, Poland. This connection fosters cultural exchange. It promotes friendship between the two towns.

Today, Roztoky thrives as a modern town. It has a population of over 9,000. It offers a blend of historical charm and contemporary life. The town is located on the railway line Prague–Ústí nad Labem. It provides easy access to other destinations.
