Did you know that Smečno boasts a dragon history? The town of Smečno, nestled between Kladno and Slaný, holds more than just scenic views. It whispers tales of knights, dragons and golden crowns. Let’s delve into the history of this urban monument zone.

Smečno’s story begins in the 13th century. Bishop Bolezlav of Zmecen resided in a wooden fortress here. Fast forward to 1418, and the Martin family acquired the Smečno estate. They held it for five centuries. Interestingly, when Smečno became a town in 1510, its name briefly changed. It was known as Muncifaj a distortion of the Latin “Mons fagi” meaning beech mountain. However the name never stuck.

Now legend says a cruel knight named Bořita lived in the Smečno castle. His son fell in love with a simple girl. The greedy knight demanded a golden crown as a wedding gift. On the advice of a spice worker, the girl sought a dragon in a nearby gorge. This dragon possessed a golden crown inlaid with jewels. Using a spice spell, she obtained the crown. As the dragon gave chase, the spice worker cast another spell. The dragon crashed dead in the castle courtyard. The young knight and his bride sold the crown. They used the money to build a castle.

Smečno Castle stands to this day. It now serves as a retirement home and institute of social care. Its park welcomes visitors. The castle’s origins trace back to a fortress. It was rebuilt into a late Gothic castle in 1460. Then it was transformed again in the 16th century into a Renaissance arcaded castle with a Gothic tower.

Near the castle stands the Church of the Holy Trinity. Originally medieval, it underwent Renaissance-style rebuilding in 1587. The sacristy dates to the 14th century and once served as a presbytery. Inside this church lies a treasure the oldest preserved organ in Central Europe. This Renaissance instrument dates back to about 1587.

Smečno also features a statue of St. George slaying a dragon. It symbolizes the triumph over evil. Nearby, an obelisk marks the re-Catholicization of the manor. You’ll find the Empire tomb of the Martinic family in the old cemetery.

Venture toward Kadice and you might spot a slender obelisk in a field. This is a pyram or signpost. It honors Count Karel Jan Nepomuk Clam Martinic. He was a generous lord and a general during the Napoleonic Wars. He announced Napoleon’s defeat to the Allies. He even escorted Napoleon into exile.

Don’t miss Smečenská gorge. Legend claims this is where the mythical dragon lived. This canyon-like valley was carved by the Svinařovský stream. The valley is now a Natural Monument within the Džbán Nature Park.

Military history buffs will appreciate the Smečno Military Open-Air Museum. It showcases fortifications built in 1935 to 1938. This fully equipped and armed fortress is a rare preserved part of Prague’s Outer Defenses. It is open weekends from spring to autumn.

Smečno offers layers of history and legend. From dragon tales to aristocratic legacies and military fortifications, Smečno invites exploration. Take a walk through time in this remarkable town.
