From a palazzo stable to a spiritual sanctuary, that’s the story of Rome Baptist Church. Right here in the heart of Rome, in Piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina, stands this unique church. Rome Baptist Church isn’t just any church. It has a captivating history intertwined with the grand Palazzo Ruspoli. This impressive 16th-century palazzo housed more than just the wealthy Ruspoli family. It also housed their horses, in the very space that now holds Rome Baptist Church. Imagine, the echoing neighs of horses replaced by the harmonious voices of a congregation. In 1920, the Foreign Mission Board saw the potential in this historic space. They purchased the former stable and began its transformation. Decades later, in 1994, ownership was transferred to the Baptist Evangelical Christian Union of Italy. Today, the building serves as a thriving center of worship and community. The sanctuary on the first floor welcomes over 200 worshippers. The second floor bustles with activity in its Sunday school classrooms and meeting rooms. Up on the third floor, the pastor’s apartment offers a peaceful retreat. Rome Baptist Church’s story truly began in 1962. A small group of twelve gathered for worship in the palazzo. This intimate gathering marked the beginning of a vibrant community. Officially organized in 1963 with just fifteen charter members, the church’s growth is a testament to its enduring appeal. The church’s history is also a story of dedicated leadership. Rev. William C. Ruchti and his wife Helen, missionaries sent by the Foreign Mission Board, nurtured the church in its early years. Rev. Ruchti served as pastor until 1985, guiding the church through its formative years. He was followed by Rev. Kenneth Lawson, who served until 1998. A period of volunteer leadership followed before Rev. David Hodgdon became pastor in 2001, continuing the church’s legacy of faithful service. In 2000, Rome Baptist Church achieved another milestone. It became independent of the International Mission Board, marking a transition to self-sufficiency and reflecting its growth and stability.
