Is this where the Kaiserin-Augusta-Schule has always stood? The Kaiserin-Augusta-Schule, a grand old institution, has graced Cologne’s cityscape for over a century. Founded in 1902, this school for higher daughters was the brainchild of Friedrich Blumberger, a visionary educator. Its initial home was on An Lyskirchen Street. However, the school quickly outgrew its first home and moved to its own building on Kartäuserwall. The Kaiserin-Augusta-Schule, like many landmarks during wartime, was repurposed as a military hospital during World War I. After the war, British forces briefly occupied the building. World War II brought more turmoil. The Wehrmacht, Germany’s wartime forces, claimed the building. The school was forced to relocate once more, this time to its current location at Georgsplatz 10. This building, steeped in its own history, previously housed the Liebfrauenschule Köln, a religious institution. For decades, the Kaiserin-Augusta-Schule remained a girls-only institution. In 1972, the school opened its doors to boys, marking a new chapter in its history. Today, the Kaiserin-Augusta-Schule stands as a testament to the enduring power of education and its capacity to adapt and thrive through changing times.
