“Can a pond whisper secrets?” a child once asked me here at Xaverovský rybník I. It’s a question that has stayed with me, because in a way, this pond does speak. It tells a story of change, resilience, and the constant interplay between nature and human intervention. Xaverovský rybník I, nestled in the Horní Počernice district of Prague, is a relatively young addition to the city’s waterscape. It wasn’t here a century ago. It emerged in the 1960s, alongside its sibling, Biologický rybník, now known as Xaverovský rybník II. They were created as part of a project to manage the flow of the Svépravický potok, a vital waterway in this area. Originally, Xaverovský rybník I was smaller, around 14,000 square meters. However, the construction of the D11 motorway forced a reshaping of the landscape. Part of the pond’s right bank had to be filled in. As a result, the pond was extended eastward, creating the elongated, almost triangular shape we see today. The motorway’s proximity also necessitated fortifying the right bank with foil and concrete panels. Sadly, these modifications marked the last significant investment in Xaverovský rybník I for many years. Over time, the pond became choked with overgrowth and accumulated a thick layer of sediment. The inlet and overflow structures fell into disrepair. The pond changed ownership several times, finally coming under the care of the City of Prague in 2018. Recognizing the dire state of Xaverovský rybník I, the city initiated a revitalization project. The first step was clearing the overgrown banks and draining the pond to remove the accumulated sediment. An astonishing 2,500 cubic meters of sediment were removed, enough to fill almost an Olympic-sized swimming pool. This material wasn’t wasted. It was used to build a noise barrier along the D11 motorway, further demonstrating the interconnectedness of this area. The banks were leveled, reinforced, and paved with stone. New outlet and safety overflow structures were installed. All concrete structures were faced with stone. Even old beams were repurposed as underwater sculptures near the inlet, creating habitats for aquatic life. The revitalization of Xaverovský rybník I also involved improvements to the surrounding area, creating a landscape park between the pond and the motorway. Today, Xaverovský rybník I is once again a thriving part of Prague’s natural landscape. It serves as a haven for wildlife and a place for people to connect with nature. The pond’s surface gleams in the sunlight, reflecting the sky and the surrounding trees. It is a testament to the power of restoration and a symbol of hope for the future. So, can a pond whisper secrets? Perhaps not in words, but in the rustling of reeds, the splash of a fish, and the quiet beauty of its waters. Xaverovský rybník I certainly has a story to tell. A story we can all learn from.
