Have you ever felt the quiet reverence of a newly consecrated space? The Rumänisch-orthodoxe Kirche Zur Heiligen Auferstehung in Vienna’s Simmering district is just such a place. This stunning church isn’t ancient. It’s a relatively modern structure. Yet its story is rich with the echoes of faith and perseverance.
The Rumänisch-orthodoxe Kirche Zur Heiligen Auferstehung stands as a testament to the Romanian Orthodox community in Vienna. For years before its construction this community worshipped alongside the Greek Orthodox. They shared services at the Holy Trinity Church. Eventually the desire for their own church grew. In 1906 they even began holding services in a rented apartment. This small space was later converted into a chapel.
A grand ambition took root. A church building fund was established in 1908. This was the year of Emperor Franz Joseph I’s 60th jubilee. The hope was to build their own sacred space. However the First World War intervened. The economic hardship and inflation that followed made the dream seem impossible for years.
Years of fundraising and hope followed. Finally in 2001 a suitable plot of land was acquired in Simmering. The site was part of a redevelopment project. It followed the extension of the U3 subway line. Construction began in 2002. The church’s architects were Miki Ionescu and Georg Baldass of baldassion architektur.
The Rumänisch-orthodoxe Kirche Zur Heiligen Auferstehung was officially opened on April 27 2003. This was Romanian Orthodox Easter Sunday a day of profound religious significance. Its street facade features a striking round-arched portal adorned with paintings and an inscription. A small bell tower stands beside it. Inside the church the floor gleams with polished granite. The iconostasis is the work of Gheorghe Gheorghita Vornicu. Vasile Lefter created the frescoes.
