In 1937 seven towns and villages merged. They formed Edogawa Ward. Edogawa Ward is a special ward in Tokyo. It’s located in the Tokyo Metropolis. The Edo River flows along its eastern edge. This is how Edogawa Ward got its name.

Edogawa Ward’s history is fascinating. It wasn’t always a ward. It was formed from smaller settlements. These included Koiwa and Komatsugawa towns. Several villages also joined. These were Kasai Matsue Mizue Shinozaki and Shikamoto. Their unification created Edogawa.

Edogawa boasts a unique cultural blend. It is home to a significant Indian community. Many Indian families live in the Nishikasai area. They arrived in the late 1990s. They came to work on the Y2K problem. The area’s proximity to the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line made it convenient for commuting to jobs. This influx created a thriving Little India. It features restaurants serving both Northern and Southern Indian cuisine. The Edogawa Indian Association is also there. Jagmohan S Chandrani leads this organization. He’s known as the father of Little India. The Global Indian International School Tokyo caters to the large Indian population.

The climate in Edogawa is humid subtropical. Summers are hot and humid. Winters are mild but can get cold. Rainfall is higher in summer than in winter. The average annual temperature is around 15.9 degrees Celsius. The highest recorded temperature was 38 degrees Celsius. This was recorded in 1976. The lowest recorded was minus 4.1 degrees Celsius. This was recorded in 1991.

Edogawa offers diverse attractions. There’s the Edogawa Boat Race Course. Edogawa Stadium is also there. Kasai Seaside Park is a popular destination for recreation.

Many notable people have ties to Edogawa. They include athletes like Seiya Ando and Daisuke Matsuzaka. Famous actors and musicians have lived there too. These include Maki Goto and Kreva. Edogawa is a vibrant ward with a rich history and a diverse community. It is a truly special part of Tokyo.
