Fairmont High School

In 1977, amidst the burgeoning suburbs of Cape Town, Fairmont High School first opened its doors. Initially known as Eversdal English Medium School, Fairmont High School quickly became a cornerstone of the community. The official opening ceremony, held on September 5, 1978, was presided over by P.S. Meyer, the Director of Education. The school’s first principal, Clive Wigg, led Fairmont High School for an impressive 25 years until his retirement in 2002. Fairmont High School’s history is also marked by the contributions of Liz Muller, who took the helm after Wigg but sadly passed away in 2006. Following Muller, Ron Dingley served as principal until 2016. The school’s motto, “Stand Fast,” reflects the enduring spirit of Fairmont High School and its students. Fairmont High School isn’t just about academics. It boasts a thriving sports program and state-of-the-art facilities. Imagine training on one of the first hockey astros in the Northern Suburbs or taking a dip in the school’s enclosed Aquatic Centre. The campus also features eight tennis courts, two soccer fields, two rugby fields, several netball courts, two cricket fields, and an indoor student center for various sports. Fairmont High School also excels in the arts, offering a wide range of cultural activities from acting and playwriting to musicals and talent shows. Students can also join one of the twenty-one societies available. Did you know that in 2009, Fairmont High School was recognized as one of South Africa’s top ten performing schools in math and science? This academic excellence is a testament to the dedication of the teachers and students. Fairmont High School has also nurtured notable alumni like Sarah Oates, a talented violinist who performed with renowned orchestras worldwide. Another alumna, Tamaryn Schultz, represented South Africa in gymnastics. Fairmont High School’s three houses, Dale, Innes, and Muir, are named after prominent figures in Cape education: Sir Langham Dale, Sir James Rose Innes, and Sir Thomas Muir, each of whom served as Superintendent-General of Education. The school colors, brown, green, and white, symbolize the school’s connection to nature and its pursuit of excellence.
