The hum of colossal machinery vibrates through the ground. You stand before the Lamma Power Station a behemoth of industry on Lamma Island.
This isn’t just any power station. The Lamma Power Station is a significant part of Hong Kong’s history. It provides electricity to Hong Kong Island and Lamma Island itself. Its construction began decades ago. It’s been expanded many times since then.
Initially fueled primarily by coal the station has evolved. It now boasts a mix of coal-fired oil-fired and gas-fired units. There are also solar panels. They represent a commitment to sustainability. The solar farm began small in 2010. It has been upgraded several times since then. It now provides 1.1 MW of power and is expected to reach 1.2 MW. This shows a dedication to cleaner energy sources.
But did you know that the Lamma Power Station has eight coal-fired generator units? Seven gas turbine units stand ready as backup. These units weren’t all installed at once. The installations happened in stages over more than a decade. The initial three 250 MW coal-fired units were the start. Three 350 MW coal-fired units followed along with seven gas turbines. The final two 350 MW coal-fired units were added later in 1995 and 1997. This demonstrates the power station’s growth. It reflects Hong Kong’s increasing energy demands.
Even more impressive is the recent addition of Unit 13. A natural-gas-fired combined cycle unit. This powerful addition will further enhance the station’s capabilities. This unit is scheduled to start operating in early 2029. This illustrates that Lamma Power Station is always looking to the future.
The Lamma Power Station is more than just a power plant. It is a testament to engineering ingenuity and Hong Kong’s energy evolution. The station is a blend of traditional and modern technology. It’s a remarkable site showcasing the island’s significant role in powering the city. It’s also a reminder of ongoing efforts toward a sustainable energy future.
