Ever wonder what goes on behind those walls? Oxon Hill High School has a story as rich as its academic programs. It stands as a beacon of learning in Prince George’s County.
Oxon Hill High School opened its doors in 1925. It started as the Oxon Hill Consolidated School. This was a union of five elementary schools. The school quickly expanded. Additions were made in 1926 and between 1928 and 1938. This original site is now Oxon Hill Elementary School.
In 1948, the school changed. It became a grades 7 through 12 school in a new building. This building now serves as the Education and Staff Development Center. A larger campus opened in 1959 on Leyte Drive. This is where Oxon Hill High School stands today.
Oxon Hill High School has a fascinating history. In 1966, it was chosen for the U.S. Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program. This was one of the first schools in the nation to have this program. In 1995, tragedy struck when student Charles “Chuck” Marsh was killed. This event led to President Clinton mentioning school uniforms in his State of the Union address.
A new school building was completed in 2013. The old building was demolished. The new facility has a capacity of 1,200 students. Oxon Hill High School is known for its Science and Technology Program. This magnet program began in 1982. It is a highly selective program. Students must earn a minimum of thirteen credits in specific courses. These courses include mathematics, pre-engineering technology, research, and science.
The Science and Technology Program offers several areas of study. These include pre-engineering technology and biological sciences. Physical sciences and computer science are also options. Students complete a research practicum in their senior year. Many Science and Technology Program students receive scholarships. Oxon Hill High School scholarship awards have exceeded $23 million annually.
Oxon Hill High School has many notable alumni. Taraji P. Henson is an Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning actress. Rebekkah Brunson is a 5-time WNBA champion. Danny Gatton was a virtuoso guitarist. These are just a few of the successful people who walked these halls.
The school’s mascot is a Clipper Ship. The school motto is “Navis Semper Naviget.” This means “May The Ship Sail Forever.” Oxon Hill High School continues to educate and inspire. It prepares students to create a better tomorrow.
