Ever wonder where Stockholm’s students and locals alike go for a refreshing dip? That would be GIH-badet. GIH-badet is a municipal indoor swimming pool. It sits at Drottning Sofias väg 20. That’s right by the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences. It’s in Lill-Jansskogen. That’s on Norra Djurgården in Stockholm.

Back in 1939, architects Gunnar Wejke and Kjell Ödéen planned a swimming hall. It was for the new Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences. World War II got in the way. A scaled-down version was built instead. The school finally completed the bath in the 1960s. In 1965, GIH-badet opened. It was for students and the public.

GIH-badet features a 25-meter pool. There are springboards at one and three meters. A five-meter diving tower stands tall. A smaller teaching pool is also available. Björn S Jonsson created a glass and concrete relief. It is called “Uppåt väggarna”. It decorates one end wall.

The City of Stockholm’s sports administration runs GIH-badet. It is open to everyone. GIH-badet closed for renovations in 2016. The facility got a makeover. It reopened in the autumn of 2019.

Imagine the energy here. Students train hard. Families enjoy a day out. Serious swimmers clock their laps. Novices learn the basics. GIH-badet is more than just a pool. It’s a community hub. It is a place for health and recreation.

GIH-badet is a testament to perseverance. The original plans faced wartime challenges. It took decades to realize the vision. Today, it stands as a modern facility. It serves the needs of a diverse population.

The pool echoes with laughter and splashing. Sunlight streams through the windows. It illuminates the water. The scent of chlorine fills the air. It mixes with the sounds of exertion and enjoyment.

Notice the relief by Björn S Jonsson. “Uppåt väggarna” adds an artistic touch. It reflects the spirit of upward movement. It is a fitting symbol for a place of physical activity. GIH-badet is more than just a place to swim. It’s a place to strive and improve.

So next time you’re looking for a swim in Stockholm, remember GIH-badet. It is a place where history, health, and community converge. A place where everyone can dive into a better version of themselves. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a casual swimmer, GIH-badet offers something for everyone.
