Gymnazium Říčany. This seemingly ordinary building holds within its walls a captivating story. A story that began back in 1950 when the doors of Gymnazium Říčany first opened to eager students. This is not just a school, but a living testament to changing times, weathering storms and emerging stronger. Imagine the year 1950, the post-war world finding its footing. Gymnazium Říčany was born, a beacon of education and hope. Originally named “Gymnázium Zdeňka Nejedlého” after the then Minister of Education, the school has seen various educational reforms. In 1953, it transitioned to an eleven-year secondary school, and later, in 1960, it became a twelve-year Secondary General Education School. However, the spirit of a traditional gymnasium was revived in the academic year 1968-69, a testament to its enduring legacy. One of the most intriguing aspects of Gymnazium Říčany is its Foucault’s Pendulum, installed in 1996 after years of preparation. This mesmerizing scientific marvel, a testament to the earth’s rotation, stands as a source of pride for the school. But Gymnazium Říčany’s story is not without its share of drama. In 1978, a school trip turned into a terrifying hostage situation. A bus carrying third-year students on a trip to East Germany was hijacked. The hijackers, demanding passage to West Germany, took the students hostage. Thankfully, due to the bravery of the students and the efforts of authorities, all 39 students survived. This harrowing event is a stark reminder of the fragility of peace and the resilience of the human spirit. Today, Gymnazium Říčany stands tall, educating a new generation. Its classrooms have echoed with the dreams and aspirations of countless students, some of whom have gone on to become notable figures in various fields. This institution is more than just bricks and mortar – it’s a legacy built on knowledge, resilience and hope.
