Did the gate always stand here, guarding the Imperial Palace? Not exactly. The Inuimon Gate, located near Kitanomaru Park, wasn’t always in this spot. It was moved here during the Meiji period from the Nishinomaru of the former Edo Castle. “Inui” translates to “northwest,” reflecting its original directional significance. The Inuimon Gate is designed in the Kyoto style, a notable detail for architecture enthusiasts. It serves as one of the exits for visitors strolling along the scenic Inui Street, a 750-meter pathway lined with trees. The Inui Street stretches from Sakashitamon Gate to the Inuimon Gate. It offers a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of the Imperial Palace grounds. This path is typically closed to the public, but it opens for a limited time during peak seasons like the cherry blossom season in spring and when the autumn leaves are at their most vibrant colors. Imagine strolling along Inui Street in autumn, the leaves creating a fiery canopy overhead. You enter through the Sakashitamon Gate and exit through the Inuimon Gate, immersing yourself in the tranquil beauty of the Imperial Palace. The experience is free and requires no reservations, but be sure to arrive between 9 am and 3 pm. Remember, entry to Inui Street is exclusively through Sakashitamon Gate. The Inuimon Gate stands as a testament to a rich history, moved from its original location and now offering passage to a hidden gem within the Imperial Palace.
