Penshurst War Memorial

At the heart of Penshurst, the Penshurst War Memorial stands as a powerful testament. It serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by Australians in times of conflict. The memorial isn’t just a structure. It’s a living story etched in granite and stone. Unveiled on November 11, 2011, the Penshurst War Memorial commemorates those who served in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The memorial’s design is striking. A paved floor leads to a central altar of polished granite. This altar features the Cross of St. George, a symbol of courage and sacrifice. Two granite sentinels stand guard. One depicts a fading image of an “old digger,” representing those who served in past conflicts. The other portrays a young digger from the Afghanistan conflict, symbolizing the ongoing commitment of Australian troops. Four pylons surrounding the altar represent the Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy, Royal Australian Air Force, and Women’s Services. The Penshurst War Memorial is more than just a monument. It’s a place of remembrance. It honors those who gave their lives and acknowledges the service of all who participated in Australia’s military history. It’s a tribute to the courage, resilience, and unwavering dedication of the men and women who have served their nation. The Penshurst RSL Sub-Branch, with the support of its members, erected the memorial. Their dedication ensures that the stories of service and sacrifice will continue to resonate through the generations. A plaque at the memorial bears the inscription “Lest We Forget,” a solemn reminder of the enduring importance of remembrance.
