A half-moon graces the spire. That’s the first thing you notice about St Othmar. It’s a curious detail atop this magnificent church.

St Othmar under the Weissgerber is more than just a church. It’s a testament to Viennese history and faith. Built by the renowned architect Friedrich von Schmidt it took eight years. Its construction concluded in 1873. Cardinal Othmar von Rauscher the Archbishop of Vienna at the time oversaw its consecration. His coat of arms is proudly displayed near the main entrance. Can you spot it?

This wasn’t the first church on this site. The Weissgerber district had simpler predecessors. A Wolfgang chapel existed until the first Turkish siege. Later a Trinity chapel stood but it was destroyed during the second siege. A Margarethen church followed. Its altar piece and other items now grace St Othmar. This shows the long history of faith in this area. St Othmar inherited a rich heritage.

World War II left its mark on St Othmar. A bomb severely damaged the structure. All the windows shattered. Incredibly a shell remains lodged in the tower. Repairs took until 1960. They restored this magnificent building to its former glory.

The architecture is striking. Neo-Gothic in style St Othmar boasts a 52-meter length. Its interior is 20 meters high and 87 meters wide. Add in the side aisles and the space expands. The 80-meter tower is Vienna’s fifth tallest. Notice its unique hexagonal base. It stands slightly before the main entrance. This was a conscious design choice by the architect.

Look closely at the details. The high altar displays sculptures by Franz Melnitzky. They depict Saints Severin Joseph Othmar and Leopold. Oil paintings embellish the sanctuary. They celebrate St Margaret and the Holy Family. Other artists such as Adolf Wagner and Erwin Grienauer contributed to the stunning artwork. Even the Stations of the Cross bear the mark of Rudolf Holzinger a prominent Nazarene School artist.

St Othmar is not merely a house of worship. It’s a hub of community. In the 1960s the Arnold Schoenberg Choir originated from within its walls. Today a vibrant Christmas market lights up the Kolonitzplatz each year. This shows its continuing role in local life.

So as you stand before St Othmar remember more than just its beauty. Consider the centuries of faith and resilience reflected in its stones. Its half-moon spire stands as a symbol of hope and a reminder of the lasting impact of faith in Vienna’s history.
