Pineapple Mountain or Lo Pok Shan as it is known locally awaits us. This 121-meter-high peak resides in Hong Kong’s western New Territories.

Today we explore not just a hill but also a source of local confusion and intrigue. Are you ready to unravel the mysteries of Lo Pok Shan?

Interestingly when hikers mention “Por Lo Shan”, they often mean the “Grand Canyon of Hong Kong”. This canyon lies a few kilometers west of Lo Pok Shan. The official name of that canyon is actually Leung Tin Au Valley. The name confusion exists for a few reasons. The “Grand Canyon” lacks an official name. The road to it starts near Leung King Estate at the foot of Lo Pok Shan.

Although Lo Pok Shan itself isn’t restricted, the “Grand Canyon of Hong Kong” is. It’s inside the Tsing Shan Firing Range. This range is used by the People’s Liberation Army and Hong Kong police forces. The firing range is sometimes open to the public. Check the Hong Kong Government press releases to confirm open days. Sundays and Public Holidays are often open days. Trespassing on restricted days is a criminal offense.

Despite its modest height, Lo Pok Shan offers some stunning views. The rocks got their unique shape from wind erosion. Furthermore, as the rocks contain silica, when combined with acid rain, silica acid is released, leaving the place with a deadly look without many green plants.

Imagine standing here. Picture the wind. It has sculpted the landscape over countless years. Feel the history. The area has served different purposes from military training grounds to hiking destination.

Lo Pok Shan stands as a testament to Hong Kong’s diverse landscape. It is a place where natural beauty meets military activity. It is a place where confusion and discovery go hand in hand. As we leave Lo Pok Shan, consider its dual identity. A quiet peak and a gateway to a dramatic canyon.
