Did the name Mount Paran Missionary Baptist Church ever ring a bell? This church, right here before us, has a history as rich and layered as a good Sunday dinner. Mount Paran Missionary Baptist Church first opened its doors in 1930. A small group of fourteen faithful members, led by Reverend E. D. Robinson, started it all. They began humbly in a simple wooden house on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Imagine, their very first offering totaled just $6.25. From those humble beginnings, the church blossomed. The Sunday School, Mission Department, and Senior Usher Board were the first auxiliaries. Mount Paran Missionary Baptist Church has also seen several name changes over the years. It’s been known as Lakeside Baptist Church, First Colored Baptist Church, and Mount Paran Baptist Church. Each name reflects a different chapter in its journey. The church has been rebuilt and relocated several times. The current building we see today dates back to 1990, a testament to the vision of Pastor C.L. Pennywell. Six pastors have guided Mount Paran Missionary Baptist Church. Reverend E.D. Robinson, Reverend Johnny Young, Reverend L.W. Reed, Reverend C.L. Pennywell, Reverend Lonnie L. Moore Jr., and Reverend Everett L. Hall all played crucial roles. They nurtured the community. They also helped shape the church into what it is today.
