Brent Rodd’s legacy. It echoes through the streets of Rodd Point. This picturesque suburb, nestled on the shores of Iron Cove, owes its very name to this influential figure. Rodd Point. It wasn’t always known by this name. In 1836, Brent Clements Rodd, a man with a vision, purchased land from the Five Dock Farm estate. This marked the beginning of the Rodd family’s century-long impact on this area. Rodd Point stands as a testament to their enduring presence. Imagine a bustling family of 12 children. Their laughter and footsteps filled the streets that now bear their names. Brent, Brisbane, Burnell, Clements, Janet, Lenore, Rodd, Trevanion, and Undine. Each street a whispered reminder of the family’s deep roots. Even Barnstaple Road carries a piece of their history, named after the family’s cherished home, Barnstaple Manor. This manor, in turn, was a nod to Brent’s birthplace in Britain. In the heart of Rodd Park, beside the Dobroyd Aquatic Club, stands a memorial. This seemingly simple monument holds a hidden story. It was once the Rodd family mausoleum, a final resting place before the bodies were moved to Rookwood Cemetery in 1903. Rodd Point’s connection to the family extends beyond the mainland. Just off the coast lies Rodd Island, another tribute to Brent Clements Rodd. In the 19th century, this island served a unique purpose. Scientists sent by the renowned Louis Pasteur used it as a base for their groundbreaking research on rabbit eradication. Today, it is a peaceful recreation reserve, part of the Sydney Harbour National Park. The vibrant energy of Rodd Point continues today. The Bay Run, a popular path for joggers, walkers, and cyclists, winds past Rodd Park, connecting the community to the waterfront and the enduring legacy of the Rodd family.
