In 1937 a section of Broad Branch disappeared. It vanished underground. Pushed into a pipe. This wasn’t some natural phenomenon. It was a deliberate act. Broad Branch a tributary of Rock Creek had become a victim of urban development. Untreated stormwater eroded the stream. It caused unstable gullies. Sediment choked the life out of the water. The surrounding environment suffered. Wildlife habitat vanished. The aquifers below were compromised.
But Broad Branch’s story doesn’t end there. This is where a remarkable restoration project began. It started with daylighting a process of bringing Broad Branch back above ground. This involved removing the pipe that had hidden it for decades. The revitalization was significant. It exposed the stream to sunlight air soil and vegetation. This helped remove pollutants. The restorative work employed the regenerative stream channel RSC technique. This method used sand wood chips stone and logs. They built step pools absorbing the power of stormwater. These pools also provided surfaces for biological activity.
Four government agencies collaborated on this effort. The Department of the Environment DDOE the Department of Transportation DDOT the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority DC WASA and the National Park Service NPS all worked together. The project also included curb cuts. Storm sewers were redirected to rain gardens. This slowed cooled and filtered stormwater. The result is stunning. The restored Broad Branch is now a beautiful addition to Rock Creek Park. It’s a testament to what’s possible when we work to heal the environment and preserve our natural heritage. Linnean Creek a tributary of Broad Branch was also part of this project. Its restoration involved filling more than just the surface channel. It also filled the underground portion of the watershed. This helps keep the stream flowing during dry periods.
Broad Branch’s story also reveals a darker chapter. Along Broad Branch Road two Black families were forced from their land. Their homes were razed to make way for the development of Chevy Chase DC. The Black Broad Branch Project documents this injustice. It aims to honor their legacy and seeks repair for their descendants. The story of Broad Branch is a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of our environment and our social history. It is a story of loss and resilience a story of destruction and renewal. A story that continues to unfold.
