Sir Douglas Clague officially opened it. It was a momentous occasion. Hong Kong gained its first indoor public pool. It was also the first heated public pool in the territory. Imagine the excitement. The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club generously donated over HK$8 million. This funded the pool’s construction. The original design included a heated 50-meter main pool. There was also an outdoor pool and a paddling pool for children. Architect Sam Lim designed this impressive complex. The Urban Council managed the pool until 2000. Then the Leisure and Cultural Services Department took over. The pool expanded. In 1982 a second indoor pool opened. This was the Urban Council’s first indoor teaching pool. It was also innovative. It had a ramp for disabled people. This thoughtful addition made swimming accessible to everyone. Today Morrison Hill Swimming Pool boasts four pools. The indoor area has the magnificent 50-meter main pool. This main pool includes a spectator stand. It holds 203 people. There’s also a smaller training pool. Outdoors you’ll find a teaching pool and a toddler’s pool. The complex stands as a testament to progress and community well-being. It’s a place where generations have learned to swim.
