A weathered clock tower peeks from behind the gabled roof. This is Östra kanslihuset.

Before you stands Östra kanslihuset a building steeped in history. It served as the entrance to the naval shipyard alongside its counterpart Västra kanslihuset. Built between 1862 and 1864 it was the office of the shipyard’s director.

Victor Ringheim architect and head of the Mechanical Department at the Royal Swedish Navy designed Östra kanslihuset. He also oversaw the renovation of Västra kanslihuset at the same time. The clock in the tower a subtle yet prominent feature is a testament to this era.

Östra kanslihuset wasn’t just an office. Until 1900 the navy’s high guard was stationed here. The building buzzed with activity. Imagine the daily routine the comings and goings of officers and guards. The air thick with the scent of salt and tar from the nearby shipyard.

In 1969 the shipyard moved to Muskö. Östra kanslihuset’s role shifted. It’s now a testament to Stockholm’s maritime past. It stands proudly a quiet witness to centuries of naval history. The building’s current tenants Strömma Turism & Sjöfart AB ensure its continued presence on Skeppsholmen. Statens fastighetsverk manages this important historic site.
