Gazing upon this metallic marvel, the Sonnenuhr Sculpture whispers tales of time. Right here on Ubierring, the Sonnenuhr, also known as the sundial, stands as a testament to the interplay of light and shadow. The Sonnenuhr Sculpture arrived at its current location on January 20th, 2023. It was moved due to new construction at the TH-Cologne Deutz campus. This modern masterpiece, crafted from metal by Prof. Otto Bauer, was originally unveiled in 1984. Its inscription, “Durch Licht und Schatten wird die Welt regiert, durch Licht und Schatten wird die Zeit gezeigt,” translates to “Through light and shadow the world is ruled, through light and shadow time is shown.” The Sonnenuhr isn’t just a sculpture. It’s a functional timepiece, marking the passage of time through the dance of light and shadow on its metal surface. The sculpture’s open hours, Monday to Friday from 6:30 am to 10:00 pm and Saturdays from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, allow ample time to witness this interplay. As you stand before the Sonnenuhr, consider its message. Time, like the world, is governed by contrasting forces. Light and shadow, day and night, creation and destruction – these opposing elements shape our existence and the relentless march of time.
