“A place to honor our fallen heroes.” That’s the motto of Veterans Memorial Park. This park stands as a tribute to those who sacrificed everything. It specifically honors troops from Delaware and New Jersey. These brave men and women gave their lives in service to our country.
Veterans Memorial Park first opened in 1956. Since then, people have come here to remember the fallen. Families find solace and peace here. Memorial Day and Veterans Day see large gatherings. People attend formal ceremonies to pay their respects. Throughout the year, individuals visit to reflect quietly.
Garrett E. Lyons had the vision for this park. He was head of the Delaware Interstate Highway Division. Lyons wanted a public park near the Delaware Memorial Bridge. He acquired 40 acres of land for this purpose. In 1962, the Delaware River & Bay Authority took over operations. They managed both the bridge and Veterans Memorial Park.
The park is home to several monuments. The original Memorial Walls were dedicated in October 1956. Veterans groups attended the dedication. Dignitaries from New Jersey and Delaware also came. They honored the nearly 15,000 service members who died in World War II and the Korean War.
Later, a Vietnam War marker was added in 1977. It pays tribute to those killed in action. There were 1,487 from New Jersey and 81 from Delaware.
A Desert Storm/Desert Shield marker followed in 1991. This marker recognizes those who served in the Gulf War. Six New Jersey troops and two from Delaware died in that conflict.
The One Army Statue arrived in 1998. It represents all unified Army forces. It is placed near the Vietnam marker. This statue especially honors Vietnam-era veterans.
In 2002, the Submariners Monument was dedicated. It commemorates Navy submariners of World War II. It honors the 52 U.S. submarines lost at sea.
The Korean War Monument was added in 2003. It stands between the flags of the United States and South Korea. It recognizes the partnership between the two nations. They fought together against North Korean invasion.
The American Eagle Statue was created in 2003. The DRBA’s Veterans Committee made it. It symbolizes loyalty and service. It honors all veterans from times of war and peace. The word “peace” on its plaque makes it unique.
The Blue Star Memorial was placed in 2006. It honors those who have defended the U.S. The Blue Star symbolizes active-duty service personnel.
In 2018, the Gold Star Families Monument was erected. It honors families who have lost loved ones. The monument includes a void design. This symbolizes those missing forever.
Today, Veterans Memorial Park continues to be a place of reflection. It is a place to honor the brave men and women who served our country. It is a reminder of their sacrifice and dedication. The park is open year-round from dawn to dusk. It invites all to pay their respects.
