Green sea turtles once thrived here. This is Sham Wan on Lamma Island. It is a place of natural beauty and historical significance.

Sham Wan is more than just a bay. It is one of Hong Kong’s five most important archaeological sites. In the 1970s, archaeologists unearthed a Bronze Age settlement here. This discovery revealed that people lived on Lamma Island during the Middle Neolithic phase around 3800 to 3000 BC.

Sham Wan is historically significant for another reason. It has been a nesting site for green sea turtles. These endangered creatures navigate vast distances to return to their breeding grounds. Sham Wan offered them a safe haven to lay their eggs.

To protect these turtles, access to Sham Wan is restricted. From April 1 to October 31 each year, the beach and adjacent waters are closed to the public. This closure allows the turtles to breed undisturbed. Entering the restricted area without permission can result in a hefty fine of $50,000 HKD.

The last known nesting at Sham Wan was in 2012. The WWF and other conservation groups are working to protect this site. Human disturbances, marine traffic, and pollution threaten the turtles. These factors can prevent females from nesting. Fishing nets and marine litter also pose dangers.

A portion of the bay has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest since 1999. This designation recognizes the ecological importance of Sham Wan. It highlights the need to protect the green turtles and their habitat.

Imagine the dedication of these creatures. They return to this very beach year after year. They face many dangers on their long journey. Yet, they persist in their instinct to nest here. Sham Wan is a testament to the resilience of nature.

We must protect this area. By respecting the access restrictions, we give the turtles a chance to recover. By reducing pollution, we create a safer environment for them.

Sham Wan is a reminder of our connection to the natural world. It shows the importance of conservation efforts. Let us do our part to ensure that green sea turtles continue to find refuge here for generations to come. Sham Wan’s story is one of ancient settlements and endangered species. It is a story of the past, present and future.
