Have you ever gazed upon a pond steeped in history? Before you lies the Záměcký rybník a charming pond nestled within Prague’s Čakovice district. This isn’t just any body of water. Its story stretches back to the 19th century a time of significant change for the area.
The Záměcký rybník is an integral part of the castle park. It first appeared on a map in 1842. However the pond itself didn’t exist then. It was located a bit further from the castle surrounded by orchards. The pond’s creation is closely linked to Alexander Schoeller. This German-Austrian industrialist and banker bought the Čakovice estate and castle after 1849. He undertook extensive renovations of the park including its walls. The Záměcký rybník’s construction followed shortly after.
Initially the pond was much larger than today covering over a hectare. It served a clear purpose likely for both aesthetic and practical reasons. Over time however the western part was filled in. In the 1950s it was leased to local fishermen. Significant changes came in the 1980s. The Mratínský potok the stream feeding the pond underwent a large-scale modernization. Its bed was concreted. This period also saw the installation of a drainage system. Stone reinforcements were added to the dam.
Sadly the Záměcký rybník suffered from neglect in the following years. Erosion became a major problem. Fish and nutria significantly damaged the banks. The pond’s banks receded by several meters. While attempts at stabilization were made in 2002 these were limited in scope and impact.
A turning point came in 2020. The Prague City Hall’s Department of Environmental Protection took over management. They included the Záměcký rybník in a broader project for the renovation of Prague’s water bodies. The pond was drained in autumn. Extensive revitalization followed in 2021. Over 3500 cubic meters of sediment were removed. The bottom was reinforced. The dam was repaired and strengthened. Unexpected discoveries surfaced during the repair of the dam. Nutria burrows and remains of old drainage systems were uncovered. These likely caused the dam’s leakage.
The revitalization transformed the Záměcký rybník. The dam is now reinforced with clay and stone. The eroded banks are stabilized with large stones. A newly created island offers a tranquil spot. Stone steps and a floating pier provide convenient access. The renewed pond is a haven for aquatic life. It offers a glimpse into Prague’s rich history and its enduring connection to its natural surroundings.
