The red-painted manor house stands tall, a beacon of history in the heart of Ritorp. You can see the red-painted wooden walls, the green-painted trim and the small, square windows. It’s a place that whispers tales of a different time.

Ritorp Manor, as it’s called, was built in the 1770s, a time of change and development in this part of Sweden. Initially, the land was just a small farm, but it was a significant place for the region, even before the manor was built. It gave the area its name and, with the advent of the manor, became a hub of activity. The manor was once surrounded by lush gardens and a beautiful park.

Life on Ritorp Manor wasn’t easy. The early inhabitants of the manor were mostly farmers, their lives governed by the rhythm of nature and the demands of the land. The manor changed hands several times, with each new inhabitant adding their own touch to the building and its surroundings.

One such resident was Wilhelm Leonard Klemming, who, along with his wife Elisabet, lived on the manor between 1862 and 1877. They were a prominent couple, Wilhelm being a factory owner, Elisabet tending to the manor garden, where they grew crops and fruits, most of which they sold at the market in Stockholm. Their time on the manor brought a certain level of sophistication and prosperity to these small, quiet fields.

The manor continued its life, its purpose and function changing with the times. It was even used as a temporary station for animals by Arvid Johansson, director of Svenska Slakteri AB, who used the manor to handle animals bought from all over Sweden.

As the city developed around it, the manor’s original surroundings disappeared and were replaced by housing. Today, the manor still stands, but the garden and park have become part of the public space, a reminder of the manor’s history and a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city.
