A crumbling ruin. That’s what remains of the once vibrant Sheung Chai Yuen.

Welcome to Sheung Chai Yuen in Hong Kong. This isn’t your typical park. This is a place steeped in history secrets and a touch of the uncanny. Sheung Chai Yuen began its life in 1854. It wasn’t always a park. It started as a temple a bustling place of worship. People called it “Ching Tin Temple”. It was renowned for its vibrant atmosphere. Hundreds maybe even more than 200 people flocked to it. It burned brightly like a thousand candles. But time and misfortune have their way. The temple eventually fell into disrepair. It was abandoned.

In 1934 Sheung Chai Yuen was reborn. It was rebuilt in a grand style. A common ossuary was added. This was a place to house the remains of those who died without family to claim them. It was a thoughtful addition. But the Second World War brought further tragedy. The war plunged Hong Kong into darkness. Many perished. Many were left unclaimed. Sheung Chai Yuen’s ossuary became a final resting place for many. Their bones lay undisturbed until a most curious discovery.

In 1996 a television crew stumbled upon Sheung Chai Yuen. They were filming a segment near Lam Tei Tsuen River. They discovered the ossuary’s contents. Bones were scattered. Some were even found outside the ossuary. The neglect was shocking. Many bones were broken and scattered on the ground. The community rallied. They wanted to reclaim the site. The remains were moved. They were carefully collected and placed in the nearby Old Rock Silent Monastery.

Sheung Chai Yuen’s story continues. In 2009 it was beautifully restored. The remains from the Old Rock Silent Monastery along with the temple were returned to Sheung Chai Yuen. The reconstruction was meticulous. However only about 150 sets of remains could be fully restored. Many had been lost to time decay and the ravages of war.

Sheung Chai Yuen. A testament to resilience. A place where history whispers. It’s a park a ruin a repository of memories. This is a place that invites reflection. It reminds us of the impermanence of things. Yet also of the enduring power of community and remembrance. It’s a story woven into the very fabric of this little corner of Hong Kong.
