In 1941, a beacon of knowledge and faith arose in Toronto’s Upper Beaches. Notre Dame Catholic High School, affectionately known as “Dame,” opened its doors to young Catholic women. The Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame established the school. Their vision was to empower these women through education. Notre Dame Catholic High School quickly became a cornerstone of the community. The school’s motto, “Ubi Honor Ibi Sum” which translates to “Where there is honour, there am I,” reflects its commitment to values and academic excellence. Originally, Notre Dame Catholic High School consisted of a single building. As the student body grew, so did the campus. In 1963, O’Connor Hall was added. It was named after Monsignor Denis O’Connor. He was the pastor of St. John Parish and instrumental in providing the school’s first site. Later, the school expanded into the neighboring St. John Catholic School. Notre Dame Catholic High School’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. The school faced overcrowding issues. Its small, one-acre site limited outdoor space. This led to two accommodation reviews, one in 2001 and another in 2009. The Toronto Catholic District School Board explored options like acquiring additional land, relocating the school, or even consolidating with other schools. Despite these hurdles, Notre Dame Catholic High School has thrived. It transitioned from a private institution to joining the Metropolitan Separate School Board (now the Toronto Catholic District School Board). Today, Notre Dame Catholic High School continues to nurture young women. It provides a supportive, all-girls environment. It fosters spiritual development, academic achievement, and leadership skills. The school’s rich history and traditions, combined with a modern approach to education, make it a special place. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a respected institution, Notre Dame Catholic High School has stayed true to its founding mission. It empowers young women to become leaders in their communities and the world.
