The church’s story began on April 4 1915. It was Easter Sunday. A chapel in Largo Guanabara became the Par\u00f3quia de Vila Mariana. The church was dedicated to Santa Generosa.
Father Marcello Franco took office on April 18. He was the first vicar. The new parish was officially established then. Part of the new matriz was inaugurated on October 26 1924.
In 1943 C\u00f4n. Pedro Gomes learned some bad news. The city planned to urbanize the area. The Matriz de Santa Generosa would be taken over. C\u00f4n. Pedro stopped construction.
C\u00f4nego Alberto Baccili became the third vicar in 1948. He knew the church needed to be finished. He restarted construction and opened the new church in 1950.
C\u00f4n. Jos\u00e9 Mayer Paine became the current pastor on February 6 1955.

He made sure celebrations started on time. He emphasized the importance of frequent confession. He was available to hear confessions after each Mass. He expanded church hours. It used to close between 10:30 am and 2:30 pm. Many people only had time during their lunch break to visit. The church began staying open from 7 am to 8 pm. A new Mass time was created at noon from Monday to Saturday. The facade was renovated and an industrial kitchen was installed.
During the pandemic, Santa Generosa played an important role. Masses and confessions were offered. The church used European cleaning and health protocols. In June 2020 Santa Generosa celebrated ten Sunday masses. People came from all over the city. The church offered as many masses as needed. Today, the church offers nine masses on Sundays and five daily masses. Confessions are available for six hours Monday through Saturday. On Sundays, they are available from 8 am to 10 pm.
Various initiatives strengthen Santa Generosa’s missionary role. These include processions on special dates. Catechesis prepares adults for the sacraments. A children’s catechesis program is also available. During the 11 am Sunday Mass children’s ministry is offered.
