Do you see that hill overlooking the bay? That is Goat Hill, the location of Fort Barrington. The fort is a historic military site offering stunning views and a glimpse into Antigua’s past. It stands as a reminder of the island’s strategic importance.

Fort Barrington, originally named Goat Hill Fort, has a rich history. It was also known as Cripplegate Battery and Queen’s Battery. In 1779, it was renamed Fort Barrington in honor of Admiral Samuel Barrington. He was the commander in chief of the Leeward Islands station.

The fort’s location was ideal for protecting St. John’s Harbor. It sits at the western entrance, offering a clear view of the harbor and the anchorage outside. From here, soldiers could monitor ship movements. They could also signal to nearby Rat Island using flags and lights.

The British first built a battery on Goat Hill in the 17th century. This battery faced many attacks. By the 18th century, it was often in disrepair. After Queen Anne’s War, the battery was abandoned.

In 1779, a new fort was constructed on the same site. Fort Barrington was built to assist Fort James. Fort James was located at the harbor’s opposite entrance. Together, they provided strong protection for St. John’s Harbor.

General William Mathew Burt oversaw the fort’s completion. He was the governor of the Leeward Islands. Fort Barrington played a vital role during the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. It served as a major British fortification.

Fort Barrington saw significant action, possibly more than any other fort on Antigua. It was captured and liberated from the French multiple times. This back-and-forth struggle highlights its strategic importance.

Today, you can explore the ruins of Fort Barrington. A semicircular gun emplacement and a powder magazine are still intact. Internal stone steps lead through the lower interior. These features offer a glimpse into the fort’s original design.

Climbing to Fort Barrington might be a bit vertiginous. But the views from the top are worth it. You can see Deep Bay, the Royalton Resort, and the vast Caribbean Sea. It is a perfect spot for photos and reflection.

Near Deep Bay lies the wreck of the “Andes.” This three-masted steel merchant sailing ship sank in 1905. It is now a popular spot for snorkeling. The wreck is protected under the Marine Areas Act. Nothing can be taken from it.

As you explore Fort Barrington, imagine the soldiers who once stood guard here. Think about the battles fought and the history made on this very spot. It is a place where the past comes alive.

Fort Barrington is more than just a collection of stones. It is a symbol of Antigua’s resilience and strategic importance. Its story is etched into the landscape. It is a place where you can connect with the island’s rich heritage.

So, take a moment to appreciate the history and the views. Fort Barrington offers a unique perspective on Antigua’s past and present. It is a must-see for anyone interested in the island’s story.
