A captivating fragrance wafts through the air. It’s the scent of over 120 rose varieties blooming in Bon Air Park’s Memorial Rose Garden. This isn’t just any park. It’s a living tribute a testament to Arlington’s veterans.

Bon Air Park boasts more than just beautiful roses. It’s a 24-acre expanse of green. Playgrounds dot the landscape. Picnic areas beckon families. A meandering path invites leisurely strolls. Shade and sun gardens offer tranquil retreats.

But the story of Bon Air Park begins long before its current form. It’s a story of dedication and perseverance. It’s about Nellie Broyhill. In 1944 she saw a need to honor Arlington’s war veterans. Her vision was a memorial rose garden.

Nellie tirelessly pursued her dream. She secured donations from diverse sources. Churches contributed. Even the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg and Madame Chiang Kai-shek lent their support. The garden opened in 1951. Initially located near Arlington Hospital it later found its current home within Bon Air Park in 1964.

Imagine Nellie’s determination. She worked in a man’s world. She faced funding challenges and construction delays. Yet her vision persevered. Today her legacy thrives. Nellie’s bench sits near a plaque honoring 841 Arlingtonians. It’s a perfect spot to pause reflect and appreciate her remarkable contribution.

Bon Air Park’s award-winning reforested floodplain enhances its beauty and ecological significance. The Arlington Rose Foundation continues to partner with the park. It advises and assists with the garden’s maintenance. Master Gardeners of Arlington maintain the sun and shade gardens. They use them as educational resources for the community.

The park truly offers something for everyone. It is a beautiful place to have a picnic or simply relax. It’s a destination for wedding photos. It’s a living memorial. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine. So take a moment to explore Bon Air Park. Discover its beauty. Appreciate its history. Feel the spirit of Nellie Broyhill’s vision. Let the fragrance of roses fill your senses. Let the peace of the park surround you. It’s a small corner of Arlington but a significant piece of history.
