Have you ever heard of a saint boiled in oil? Right here, at St. Johannes vor dem Lateinischen Tore, that rather gruesome story is connected to the church’s very name. The name, St. Johannes vor dem Lateinischen Tore, translates to St. John before the Latin Gate. It refers to John the Apostle, who, according to legend, suffered a (survived) martyrdom by being plunged into boiling oil at the Porta Latina in Rome. This unusual dedication gives St. Johannes vor dem Lateinischen Tore a unique character. The church we see today isn’t the first on this site. A church in Bocklemünd was mentioned as early as 941 when Archbishop Wichfrid gifted it to the Cäciliensstift. The congregation grew, and by 1836, the old church needed expanding. There wasn’t enough room for a proper extension. So, a brand-new church was built on this hill overlooking the village. Designed by Vincenz Statz, the neo-Gothic St. Johannes vor dem Lateinischen Tore was constructed between 1851 and 1853. The original church was demolished in 1855. Look up at the imposing west tower. It wasn’t part of the original design. It was added in 1875, completing Statz’s vision. Inside, the church is a single-aisled hall church, with a three-sided enclosed choir. The exterior is defined by the strong vertical lines of the buttresses, which stand between the window axes. High above us, within the tower, three bronze bells ring out. They were cast in 1926 by Albert Junker Senior at the Heinrich Humpert bell foundry. These bells chime the Te Deum, a hymn of praise. The church also houses an 18-register organ built in 1989 by Romanus Seifert & Sohn. So next time you hear the bells of St. Johannes vor dem Lateinischen Tore, remember the story of St. John and the boiling oil. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and a reminder of the rich history embedded within this beautiful church.
