Surely, you’ve noticed the simple yet dignified facade of Kościół Świętego Antoniego Padewskiego. This church is not just another historical building. It holds stories of kings, battles, and artistic endeavors.

Kościół Świętego Antoniego Padewskiego stands on Senatorska Street. It is a Roman Catholic church with a rich past. King Zygmunt III Waza founded the first church here. He wanted a place to give thanks for capturing Smolensk in 1611. The victory happened on St. Anthony of Padua’s feast day. So, he chose St. Anthony as the church’s patron.

Construction of that first wooden church began in 1623. King Zygmunt III brought Franciscan friars to oversee it. In 1635, the church was consecrated by Jan Baltazar Liesch. This happened on what was then an undeveloped edge of Warsaw.

But tragedy struck during the Swedish invasion in 1657. The church was completely destroyed by allied troops.

Stanisław Leszczyc-Skarszewski funded a new brick church. Construction took place from 1668 to 1680 under Franciszek Czołowicz. Bishop Stefan Wierzbowski consecrated it in 1679. Józef Belotti likely designed the single-nave church with its triangular facade. Jan Jerzy Plersch created the sculptures inside.

King Jan III Sobieski often visited Kościół Świętego Antoniego Padewskiego. Later, King August III had a private box built for him and his wife. This was in 1734-1735. They also funded the altar of St. Joseph in 1756. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary was added between 1757 and 1781. In 1770, a classicist fence separated the church from the street.

Giacomo Casanova reportedly hid in the Franciscan monastery in 1766. He was wanted after a duel. In 1872, the building was renovated after a collapse in 1813.

The church became a parish in 1866. The church was taken over by diocesan priests due to the suppression of the Franciscan order. The main altar was moved, and the choir removed.

In 1895, the Chapel of the Holy Family was built. The Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus followed in 1907. Father Michał Woźniak served as a vicar here in the early 20th century.

During the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, German forces heavily damaged the church. Thirty bodies were found in the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. These people had been executed. Others were found partially burned.

Kościół Świętego Antoniego Padewskiego was rebuilt between 1950 and 1956. Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński consecrated the main altar in 1969. In 1949, the Franciscan friars returned to care for the church.

Today, Kościół Świętego Antoniego Padewskiego stands as a testament to resilience. It is a reminder of Warsaw’s turbulent past and enduring faith. It even served as a backdrop for films like “Akcja pod Arsenałem” and “Jack Strong”. Take a moment to appreciate the layers of history within these walls.
