“Youth and older generations connecting.” Does that sound unusual? Here at Don Valley Bible Chapel, it’s a deliberate act of community.
Don Valley Bible Chapel is more than just a church. It’s a community hub in the Sheppard and Don Mills area of Toronto. The Don Valley Bible Chapel also provides space for the Toronto China Bible Church and a Child Care Centre.
But there’s so much more to the story of Don Valley Bible Chapel.
Once upon a time, accessing this building was a challenge for those with mobility issues. The congregation wanted to improve the foyer. They hoped for a better space for gatherings and ESL classes. A kitchenette helped with refreshments.
The main entrance was not often used. Access was consolidated from an entrance off the parking lot. The original wood ceiling was revealed in the new entrance. It serves as a reminder of the building’s history. A lift was installed to provide access to the basement. An accessible washroom was added. The church office area was expanded.
James Bailey Architect helped with the design and construction. Disaster struck during the design phase. A fire caused extensive smoke damage. The building was unusable for months. This allowed the owner to expand the project scope including the chancel area. The construction phase became more complex. Two contractors were on site. One handled disaster remediation. The other was the general contractor.
Despite setbacks, the project was a success. It was due to close collaboration. The client, contractor, and consultants worked together.
But that’s not all that defines Don Valley Bible Chapel.
Remember John de Los Santos? He created a youth program. It fostered relationships between youth and older generations. Before the pandemic, youth met in small groups. They went to someone’s house for supper, prayer, and games. They built community. These dinners opened doors. They encouraged spiritual conversations. They promoted understanding. They shared a sense of mission.
Don Valley Bible Chapel is a registered charity. It complies with CRA requirements.
And now, Don Valley Bible Chapel streams its services online.
So, Don Valley Bible Chapel stands as a testament to community spirit. It embraces faith, accessibility, and intergenerational connection. It is a place where everyone can find belonging and purpose.
